sub-categories hide from the start

i have a forum with a view cats and subcats but i want that the subcats are only sown at the start page when i klick on it and not from the beginning like

main cat
- subcat1
- subcat 2
- subcat 3

that will be to long at the startspage so how can i do that?

I have set my site up to use sub-categories list format.

AdminCP => vBGallery => Modify Settings
- Main Index Page Options => Depth of Categories on Index : 1
- Categorybit Options => Depth of Categories: 1
- Categorybit Options => Show Sub-Categories: yes
