How to add a "new" label to categories in index page

How do i add a caption "new" or "recently updated" to the category description on the index page, so visitors know where to head immediately?

Just place that in the category description box with any html you wish like bold if you want it to stand out etc in admin edit categories

So i can even add colour etc and it would work? Category decription is the one on the top right hand corner right?

How about a block or something with links to the categories that have been updated?
