double watermark two watermarks

I've been meaning to ask this for a while.
What's with this phenomenon of a double watermark?
Quite often, my members' photos have two watermarks, one normal and one really small underneath it, something like a shadow of the bigger, normal one.
Does anyone else have this occurrence? If you got rid of it, what did it take to fix?

PP 5.31 at the moment, for the record.

TIA

Well that may happen when you permanently watermark photos and then change your watermarking to ON THE FLY which means you are watermarking your files twice. A watermark is an and or thing.

Hi Chuck,
It only happens here and there, it is not an "all the time" problem. This is why it baffles me...

anyway, here are my settings:

Enable on-the-fly image protection
set to YES

When using on-the-fly image generation, do you want to overlay the watermark image?
set to YES

Enable watermarking of photos with overlay image?
set to YES

Are there any other settings you need to know to help troubleshoot this?

Thanks

Its only going to happen if you have photos that are already watermarked sure.

See you are using ON THE FLY watermarks now sure. However I bet once upon a time you used permanent watermarking. In watermark options in admin watermarking should be turned off

Hi Chuck, I am still trying to figure this issue out.
I dug around.
In my PP admin page, I click to view my photopost categories, if I click the "edit" link next to the category, at the bottom of the page that comes up there is this section:

These checked usergroups will have their photos stamped with your overlay photo.*

So should I have all these usergroups unchecked or checked? Remember, I have these main settings:

Enable on-the-fly image protection
set to YES

When using on-the-fly image generation, do you want to overlay the watermark image?
set to YES

Enable watermarking of photos with overlay image?
set to YES

I checked each of my categories, some have just "Posting Users" checked off and some have all the usergroups checked off. They are not consistent, so before I go and make them all consistent, what setting do you recommend here?

And so you know, I have not changed any of the settings anytime recently, and still, even some new photos being uploaded have this double watermarking problem. Not all, but some. So it was not a "setting was changed" problem, it's a problem that persists for new photos, even today!

What's even more strange, let's say a member of my site uploads a large photo. The photo is resized.
When viewing the small version of the photo - showphoto.php?photo=#&cat=# , you see two watermarks (one big/normal and one teeny tiny one).

But when you view the showphoto.php?photo=#&size=big&cat=# , there is only one watermark!

How can this not be a bug?

Please help me fix my site, please suggest the way I need the settings I describe above (my "These checked usergroups will have their photos stamped with your overlay photo.*" question).

Thanks

You need to post a link to your site and decide what watermark your trying to do. You only set those permissions in edit cats if your doing permanent watermarking

In on the fly all you need to do is this

Enable on-the-fly image protection
set to YES

When using on-the-fly image generation, do you want to overlay the watermark image?
set to YES

Turn off watermark in watermark options but of course you want the full server path to the watermark wherre asked

Thats all you need to do for on the fly watermarking but the watermark needs to be a png image since gd2 is used for on the fly watermarking

Question

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3081

I see a watermark here why would only showing one watermark be a bug?

As I digest your other post for a moment allow me to quickly reply to the recent post.
See this photo:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3080
Notice the two watermarks?
Now click the photo to make it big.
You should now see only one watermark.
That's what I mean when I use the dreaded word.

So you mean to say that in my PP admin -> Watermark Options (adm-misc.php?admact=options&ppaction=options&section=10)

for the setting:
Enable watermarking of photos with overlay image?
I should have it set to "no"?
Because the way it is now, it is "yes"

"If enabled, position" is set to "SouthEast"
And of course, the full path to my ping is specified.
My watermark is .png

why would you expect to see one watermark when you have permanently watermarked it and the switched to on the fly? Thats the problem with watermarking if you do permanent watermarking its hard to switch because you will see two watermarks if you do

watermark options is NO if you do not want permanent watermarks. If you want to use ON THE FLY you set the switches in Image Protection

I am saying that YOU DO see only one watermark when big but YOU DO see two when small when I said:
"Notice the two watermarks?
Now click the photo to make it big.

Where I say you should now see only one watermark - I mean that that is what is happening! You see one watermark at one size and two at another size. Did you test that image?

It is double watermarked you just can not see it cause it is covered

Move you watermark to center or top left and you will see what I mean

There is your large image right above and it has your permanent watermark on it

As I have said a few times here you need to turn on ONLY ONE FORM of watermarking

Right now you have both forms turned on.

I narrowed down the problem, because at first I never had the problem, but as my site got old and I made new categories and rearranged others, the default setting for
Quote:

is by default "all checked" so they all get the overlay photo.

I'm not sure if that should be the default when no other existing categories are set this way.

Maybe not a bug but definately gets you pulling hair when all these watermark options are scattered all over the place and get created so stealthly.

No it all comes down to only having one type of watermark enabled as I have stated a few times. You can not use both types and if you switch to ON THE FLY after having permanent watermarking on then all your old photos are double watermarked.
