Table Size... help needed, please!

I have my main table width set to 100% and my sidebar set to 20%. I would like to set the pixel width of my table to 970px to align with my custom header. When I change the main table with in the Layout Options to 970px... the main menu bar resizes correctly and main table also resizes to 970 but does not take into account the 20% for the sidebar.

I then tried to set the main table width to 770 pixels and the sidebar width to 200 pixels. This does work but my menu bar then resizes to the 770 pixels rather than the full width of both the main table and sidebar

I hope I'm explaining this right... it seems I'm missing a setting somewhere. Can you help?

I suggest you leave Photopost set to 100% and sidebar at 20%

You would then open a table in your header to contain photopost set to 770 pixels. You then close that table in your footer.
