The new search results

Hello,

I am running v. 5.62 and the search results all display in one column now, whereas previous they spread out like a category view.

Is there a chance to get a switch of sorts into the admin section, where the admin can select what type of results display he gets?

I understand this new way of showing results has something do do with easing the load on higher volum sites, but similarly this makes things difficult for the individual viewer just browsing images of a particular topic.

Thanks

Hi Jens,
I've also requested this in suggestions:
Display of search results

Also because the number of thumbnails displayed in the new search results is determined by admin using this setting ...

Show Photo Options > Default number of comments per page

... viewers can not select the number of thumbs per page as with previous version.

Regarding this new version and performance improvements, I'm guessing this has more to do with the new Admin > Search Options ...

Search Options
- Require users to be registered to use search? Y/N
- Maximium number of search results to return?
- Number of seconds between searches?
- The number of seconds a user must wait between searches.
- Number of days to hold search results?

If possible, I too would like the code/instructions to replace display of the new search results with the way it was in previous versions.

Otherwise I suggest this be made an admin settings option or ultimately a user viewing option in the next version.

Hello mjm,

I read your post again and the last part stuck me as the ultimate solution: "...a user viewing option...". This would be the perfect solution.

I'm working on making the search results come up in a gallery style view, possibly with the description in alt and/or title tags. I don't know if I'll be able to make it user-selectable though, I'm not that great with HTML and making forms etc.

Hello,

We just upgraded from V 4 last week to V 6, and now all of my searches in my on-line store linking to my gallery are invalid (they state the user doesn't have permission). When I went in to all of the products and made new searches, I was shocked that the new version doesn't have gallery view for searches and the search results are not even in date order, even though in "Order Images" all images are in "latest" order. Please add me to the list of someone who is in need of getting searches to work as mjm suggested above (or how they used to work).

Also, on this same note...is there a way to use a search string as before, rather than only have the search results tied to a search number? Here is the way the search URL saves now: http://www.cottagearts.net/photopost...p?searchid=364.
Because I had to change all of the old searches, I don't have an example of how they used to be, but they are similar to this one: http://www.cottagearts.net/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=620&password=">gallery (except a search for the words "fresh powder" would have a string fresh+powder in it). The reason that this is important is I need the ability to re-generate a search on the fly from my store in order to find any new images added to our gallery using those products after I made the initial search. It used to work this way for me.

Thank you. These two functions are so important to my business that we are considering reverting to our old version (five years old) and doing our restore over (last week we had some corrupt data cause a loss of text data).

Michelle

I've got a gallery style view working. The search format does take a form like that but I can't figure out how the multiple keywords are put in.

It's like search.php?cat=0&keywords=whatever . I'd like to know this too.

If you want to see how multiple keywords are processed look here.

Yeah, I've looked at that a lot of times but I still can't think it backwards to what the query would look like if you put it in URL form. I've tried &keywords=one, two , &keywords=one&keywords=two , &keywords=one+two etc... every format I can think of but I can't figure out what it is.

So to Michelle, you would construct your URLs like:
http://www.cottagearts.net/photopost...powder&cat=602

Or if you wanted it to be "fresh OR powder":
http://www.cottagearts.net/photopost...2&condition=or

There doesn't seem to be a way to pass a preferred sort order to the search but I think you can set it in the search-r template.

The search is a post page. In fact the only thing passed through a get command in a url is keywords to my knowledge.
