Upload Problems

Am having upload problems this evening. After the Image Upload screen, a small window pops up saying that the Image Upload was a success, but the screen where you select secondary categories and optional data fields does not show up. The starting Show Category screen is shown instead and the image is not in the categories picture list.

This was working just fine a couple weeks ago. No configuration changes have been made since then. The images that are failing are JPGs and I am using ImageMajik.

The site is located at http://www.trophypix.com/gallery.

Here's a test account for you to use Chuck if needed:

Username: TestUser
Password: test

Thanks,
Michael

Check your php info and see if your host recently updated PHP. Is safe mode on or file uploads off?

Using Photopost admin "Show PHP Info", it returned PHP version 4.4.4. Build Date of Aug 18 2006. I have definitely had successful uploads since then. Am I providing the correct PHP info to you?

I can't find the Safe mode configuration, but as I mentioned earlier I haven't made any changes. The "Allow users to upload photos?" configuration option is set to Yes.

I'm still experiencing the same upload errors.

Thanks,
Michael

safe mode is an option you can see under the phpinfo and also check to see file uploads is on.

Have you tried clearing the uploads directories?

Chuck,

Still having the same problems this evening. Cannot upload images. I even tried with GD2 - same results.

In response to your last post, there are 3 subfolders in the Uploads folder. 2 are empty and 1 contains 5 or 6 files in a _vti_cnf subfolder. Do I need to delete these, the subfolders and/or the 5 or 6 files?????? Will that cause any unforseen problems?

Yes you can clear the uploads directory of any directories

who is your host? Some hosts require you to have a tmp directory in your webroot like yahoo is this the case with your host?

If the file is not making it to the uploads directory it is not even being uploaded to the server so you might want to contact the host and see if there is anything they can track down that might assist cause without errors its stabbing in the dark here

My host is Powweb, which I believe is still one of the recommended sites.

Do you think it's ImageMagick that's failing? or possibly some PHP or other web sever component possibly? Why does Photopost report that the Upload was successful when it actually failed?

Can you be a little more specific as to what questions I should ask my hosting provider?

Thanks,
Michael

P.S. I think you were the technician that installed my site. The person that did uploaded some type of weird sea creature. Would that be you?

Try changing your permissions on the data directory and try changing file processors from imagemagick to gd2.

You can ask your host why the file upload is being dropped on your server. There is nothing for our program to process hense your issue the server is dropping the file on upload.

I chmod-ed the data directory and all subdirectories/files to 777 and also tried uploads with GD2. Still not working.

Question: Should I chmod the data directory (and subs) back to the original for security reasons? If so, what is the correct octal settings?

Final Question: How does PhotoPost upload files? I need to know what web sever components (FTP, others?) are used when I call the hosting provider to try and resolve the issue. Is there a thread or other resource on this subject?

Thanks,
Micahel

We simply use an html file prompt and upload that to the server uploads directory and then once uploaded it is processed by the image processor and placed into the data directory

If your file uploads are being dropped by the server before Photopost can process them I would check that both safe mode is off and file uploads are on which they seem they are so as I suggested before you might want to contact your host and see if they can spot anything maybe a change the made to the server that might be affecting this.

Thanks, I submitted a trouble ticket. Maybe they can track it down.

Regarding the /data folder/subfolder permissions, is it OK to leave them 777?

Thanks again,
Michael

Chuck,

Here's the trouble ticket I submitted:
I run Photopost (Image Gallery PHP Suite) on my site. I had everything in good working order several weeks ago. About 2 weeks ago, file uploads STOPPED working. I have exhausted all other possibilities (PHP Safe Mode setting, PHP File Upload setting, Photopost internal configuration settings, etc) so they recommended that I contact you to look into this issue - maybe something on the server has changed that is cauring this problem. According to the Photopost technicians, their software uses an html file prompt and uploads each picture file to the server, where it is then processed by ImageMagick. The file is never making it to the server.

And here's their response:
Could you please the exact error message you are receiving, so that we can investigate further?

Since Photopost doesn't report an error (it actually reports a successful upload), I don't know how to respond. Can you provide any additional info that might help get this issues resolved? Do you know of any troubleshooting tools/scripts that might help? Does Photopost have a debug flag that we can gather addtional info on the problem?

Finally, if you believe that none of the above ideas/tools/additional info is not likely to lead to a solution, is there anyway you can call Powweb and work this thru? Or possibly another technician? I can provide admin login info if this is possible. I'd be willing to pay as I don't believe the hosting provider is going to be able to find the problem unless we can provide more detailed info. I'm dead in the water until I can get this resolved.

Regarding the folder permissions, I utilized Photopost installation service - so a Powwen technician did the install. Doesn't matter now since they're set to 777.

Thanks,
Michael

I beleive my response can be used.

You are trying to do a file upload in a program and your server is dropping the file upload so it never makes it into the uploads directory of the program to be processed.

This is my take on what is going on.

Yea, I used your response in my trouble ticket. Here's how I worded it:
"According to the Photopost technicians, their software uses an html file prompt and uploads each picture file to the server, where it is then processed by ImageMagick. The file is never making it to the server. "
Is this worded properly. Note that they replied to that description of the problem requesting an error code. Will your latest response get them going in the right direction? To me, it sounds like what I submitted in the original trouble ticket.

Finally, could you please reply to my other questions from my post earlier this evening - especially the one regarding Photopost technical support? They are:
Can you provide any additional info that might help get this issue resolved? Do you know of any troubleshooting tools/scripts that might help? Does Photopost have a debug flag that we can gather addtional info on the problem?

Finally, if you believe that none of the above ideas/tools/additional info is not likely to lead to a solution, is there anyway you can call Powweb and work this thru? Or possibly another technician? I can provide admin login info if this is possible. I'd be willing to pay as I don't believe the hosting provider is going to be able to find the problem unless we can provide more detailed info. I'm dead in the water until I can get this resolved.
Thanks,
Michael

Try giving them a test username login and tell them to try an upload. They will see the server is dropping the file upload. If the file uploads correctly it should be in the uploads directory to be processed however it is not. Therefore the server is dropping it.

You can send ftp for me to poke around.

Chuck,

I just sent you an email with my FTP and Photopost Admin login info.

I also replied to my hosting provider per your last post.

Thanks for you help.
