I would suggest you make sure you upload all the new files and have ran all applicable upgrade scripts. This is not something we can replicate

Ok so I can upgrade to 5.3 with vb 3.0.8? If so, all I do is upload the 5.3 files and run the upgrade script right?

yes and upgrade instructions are in the documentation folder.
