Upload to category and show category's subcats

Hi,
could you please instruct me if and how the following is possible.

I have top-level category which is set "Contains Thumbnails? NO" so that when I click on the top-level cat, I can see a list of the sub-cats. If the option is set to YES, I'm unable to see the sub-cats under the top-cat.

But as the "Contains Thumbnails?" is set to NO I cannot upload any photos into that category. Is this how it should work? Also, I'm not getting any error messages in this case, the upload seems to complete just fine, but the photo just disappears.

The master plan behind all this is that if I have a top-cat "Animals" and it only has one sub-cat "Cats". Now if a user uploads a photo of dog, it'd be logical (IMHO) for the user to upload it into "Animals" top-cat and then administrator could create new sub-cat "Dogs" and move the picture there.

Or how else could this be done without confusing the poor end-user (or admin) too much?

I think you would need to post your url for a better explanation of what exactly you have setup here.

Basically if a cat contains no thumbs you can not upload to it and you'll only see a subcats when clicking the topcat. If it contains thumbs you can upload to it and when clicking that cat you will see thumbs and a subcat list.

I apologise, I would've posted urls, but I'm not allowed to do that at this stage

However, as I wrote, if I set topcat's "Contains Thumbnails?" to YES, I cannot see the subcat list. As soon as I switch it back to NO, the subcat list is visible.

Without the urls, how could I go on solving this "on my own"?

Well I set my main no thumbs cat to contains thumbs to yes uploaded a photo to it and let me link it here. This is what I see when my parent cat is set to contain thumbnails

Sometimes it is best to post a url so we can visualize what your exact error is that may not come across in your description.
