How to begin using skins

Hello all,
Visitors to our site start at a home page and then are linked to view digitals on PP. But after seeing what PP can look like with "skins" I can't see any reason to have a home page to slow people down. Where is a good place to start learning about skins. I am very new to PP, so everyone please bare with me.
