Making category icons visible on index page, but not in gallery

I have a few images that I would like to display as the category icons, but I don't want the icons to be visible to other users in the gallery.

Can someone please help me.

The cat avatar function is not designed in this way. If you set a cat avatar it is shown the all.

Just a thought, in an update you should allow us to link directly to a category icon via URL (in the category edit options). What if I were to hide the image after placing it as the category avatar...? Would this work?

i agree...in an update it would make more sense to just allow a direct link for category avatars in the admin options. The way it is now is just silly.
