Improve fullsize image quality?

I've noticed that the image quality in the intermediate size is not very good. The images are always blurry. I use GD 2 I think.

Here is an example. The first image was after I had set the quality to 80% in the admin control panel. The second one is an 80% "save for web" from Adobe Photoshop. You'll notice the difference. If I look at the filesize it seems the quality has been reduced an additional 50% or so. Any way to fix this? If I go to the fullsize then the image is acceptable.

I changed my max photo size from 800x600 to 640x480 and it appears to have made a difference. The new images at 640 (previously the intermediate size) are large filesizes and clearer. I guess I'll kepe it like this because I'm sure many peeps dont realize that if you click the image again it goes to the full size. Again its still about 50% of the photoshop 80% web quality. Any info on how this feature operated would be appreciated.
