Adding the sidebar replaces my gallery

I have selected yes for the sidebar in the sidebar settings to display the statistics, calendar and custom1pal.tmpl and it then appears on the left side. OK.
When I go to edit the custom1 template in admin and only do a tiny change to see if it works, I click save to update, the main gallery disappears and the calendar take up the full width where the gallery was. I changed the template permission to enable the update but I have not changed anything else. What's gone wrong?

I would think what is happening here is whichever change your making in the template is incorrect causing a parse error in that template which causes everything else to not load from there forward. If you replace the template you edited in question I bet everything reappears.

what change are you making

I only typed "Test" to replace the word Stuff on the page, I didn't change any code. When I replaced the template with the original file everything re-appeared OK but editing the template again had the same result

What are the contents of the template after editing?

What version of the software you using?

I have just replaced the template with the original and it works OK but when I went to edit the template I did not make any changes at all, just clicked the Update custom1pal.tmpl button and it says "Template custom1pal.tmpl saved." and does the same fault as before.

I would suggest you download 5.21 and replace the changed files as this was a fixed bug
