| How to use the contest feature
Where is the documentation for setting up a contest?
All I find in the forums are issues.
I create a new cat, and set rating to 'contest'.... then what?
I upload an image... nobody can rate it, never mind vote...
Clicked "enable voting".
See "0 votes" under thumbnail.
Obviously others are doing it. What am I not seeing?
Linux slackware 8 vb 3.0.x

Okay here is the outline
1. edit a category and set to contest not regular ratings
2. while viewing the category showgallery script you hit enable voting
3. while viewing the category showgallery script you see VOTE. Users may only vote once and once the contest is over you hit end voting
4. You will as admin know the winner and all photos show how many votes they recieved

Thank you for a prompt and useful response.
Browser cache problem had me fooled. It really wasn't there. Honest.
Looks like fun.

Hi Chuck,
I am planning on running a contest but have some questions about this
1) Do users vote only once for a favorite within a category without including any type of rating?
2) I understand users have only one vote to give, but can they change their vote? Can the admin see the current vote count during the voting period?
3) This feature would benefit from some formal documentation, screenshots and explanation.
Regards,
Matt

1) Yes, because there are no "ratings" in a contest category, only votes. So, one vote (although you can leave multiple comments).
2) Yes, they can chnage their vote by cliking on a reset button.
3) I agree.

Just a simple easy walk thru would be nice.
Thanks,

I too would appreciate some more info. On my site we have informal competitions for images of the month and such. Does the Contest Mode only apply to a particular category, thereby restricting images to THAT category or can a special one be set up to have images from multiple categories like a Member Gallery?
Cheers
Bruce

I think my post above walks through it pretty well
2. while viewing the category showgallery script you hit enable voting
This means after enabling voting from admin you logged in as admin just go to the category and enable voting. You will not miss this box. It is the admin controls to voting which is displayed at the top of the category.

Gotcha Omegatron, it seemed more complicated! Melgama, I think something could be done because I think most of us are doing some basic things IE: a contest or two a month. So..........how do photos get submitted by participants, can you select a certain time when people can start voting, where do I as a admin see everything that's going on? On one site similar to mine I see he has recent, random and most popular photos when you open the main contest page that is dedicated to just photos from that section. Then there's this page, is this custom or is it something done with photopost? http://www.railroadforums.com/2005_p...st_winners.htm
I guess I got a lot of questions.
thanks,
Dave

There are a couple of main ways to attack this.
First, you create the category and restrict uploads to admins or mods only. Then you can copy whatever user images to that category that you want in the contest and enable voting.
A second way would be to open that voting cat and allow users to upload their images until a certain date. You may want to close uploads to that cat via permissions after you have enabled voting, thats up to you but both ways work well and have their place.
An option I would like to see is perhaps a check box when enabling the voting like "close cat to uploads while voting is enabled" or something like that so it would be easier than going into CP and doing it via manual permissions. I think this feature would be used more often than not to that effect.

I'm following you a little bit here. Is there a way to have one cagtegory where the photos need to be approved prior to being accepted/uploaded?
So right now I have where only I can upload, but you're saying make it so everyone can, then when the filing date is done, enable the voting change to it? With that though, which I like, I'd rather have a pre-approval process somehow.
And I still got lots of questions!
Thanks,
Dave

Dave | Hi, Dave!
How do you make this page? I put a lot of questions a couple days ago and this is one of my doubts... Quote: |

1. Opened the contest here: http://www.melgama.com/galeria/ (CLOSED)
We have just 8 users that can vote because we´re in test - my vote like admin not appear and I made a user named test and his vote not appear too...
2. Can we program the end of the contest?
3. Where is the link to the contest? How I know about this?
4. When the contest is ended should I put the photos in the right category manually or the people must upload the photos just to the contest?
5. Why can I see who voted???
Thank you... | 6. At the end of the contest I saw the winner just like user and I didn´t see the winner like admin... |

I agree that being able to set moderation on a per category basis would be a nice little add on. In the mean time, you can just let everyone upload until your time limit then shut off uploads to that cat and then remove any images you don't want there then enable voting.
