photo comment count in category not accurate

Was wondering why this might be happening.
I've noticed that the contest category that members upload to each week, the the counts of comments made on those photos are not correct.

The actual count of comments on pictures is 11

Yet, when you go back to the parent category where you see how many comments are, it says 18 ?

Where would the extra counts come from?
I checked to make sure there were no photos I hid for that category that may have had comments.

I don not understand why you say counts are wrong but I can tell you in Admin => Scan Database you can rebuild photo and comment counts under there. That with no doubt will recount all counts to what they are.

ok, I know about that option, but realized if I run it, it takes the comment count by members down dramatically. Some members have been on the website since 2003/2004 and are still active weekly. The previous owner deleted some members accounts and also members would delete their photos with all the members comments. The current active members seem to take pride that they posted a high number of critiques to members. So if their count dropped 1,000 I know they wouldn't appreciate it It happened once in 2009 to a long list of them.
Oh well, just wanted to be sure there was nothing I was missing as far as why the count was different.

well I can only discuss real actual counts in our program. If you run that option then the actual comments and photo counts per category would be correct.
