Angry Holy crap, emptying a category deletes all the photos from disk?

This is really not the way this should work. I know you're going to tell me it works the way it's supposed to, but come on. I had like 40 photos that were in two categories at once. I emptied one of the categories because I didn't want them in there, and there doesn't seem to be another way to get a picture out of a category once it's in two. I finished doing it and all the image files were gone?! The photos still had entries! Luckily I know I can just upload all the files again, move them to the right data dir and run rebuild thumbs/mediums on them, but really, this is horrible. Empty Category should check to see if the images are still in a category and NOT DELETE THEM IF THEY ARE. You can't tell me you meant to have a whole bunch of leftover entries with everything but the photo itself.

Oh yeah, and how are you supposed to remove additional categories from an image? I tried changing it to the same one it's in, but that just adds the same category as both the main cat and the alt cat. Ideally you should be able to delete any or all categories from an image, and if you delete all then it goes to a queue or in an "uncategorized" folder of some kind.

Please explain what action your doing as if you are deleting or emptying a category you are telling the program to delete the photos which would be a correct action.

If you edit a photo in an additional category or main category and delete it then the resulting Photo is transfered to the next optional cat.

The bulk options feature to empty a category in admin does not take into account the additional photo thing.

You can try this in adm-cats.php replacing the code that exists in there between the unbolded stuff with the bold in this code

I used "empty category" from the Categories menu. I knew I was taking a chance that the program would do something stupid, but I didn't see any other way to get all the photos out of the categories. I still can't even figure out how to get one photo out of a category it's in one by one.

I'll add that in and try it out. If the program is going to actually delete files from disk, it really needs to be more explicit about what it's saying. I don't think most people would expect that "emptying" a category would mean deleting files that are supposedly separate entries (with separate comments etc.) in another category.

Again, I still can't even figure out how to get one photo out of a category it's in , one at a time. How are you supposed to do that?

I'm tempted to just not allow additional categories since it seems pretty awkward.

Also, will this script, having moved the physical files, be breaking any URLs that were pasted anywhere for the photo? Or will they still refer to it somehow? This is why the photo files need to remain in a static dir and some other way needs to be used to refer to the category rather than having the category be the physical directory it's in.

If you move a photo and have a static link to an image somewhere outside the program sure it will break the link.

If your trying to edit a photo and delete it when viewing the photo hit edit photo and hit the delete box or as admin you should see the move/delete link on show photo as well as that edit photo link.

I see that, but does it delete the photo entry and the file from all categories, or just the entry leaving the file and the other category entry working, or what? It's really unclear to me (not to mention users) how you get a photo out of a category without having it gone forever.

well if you delete a photo and it has no additonal categories sure its deleted for good. If you have additional copies deleting just one copy deletes others and leaves the others alone. additional cats shows a photo in up to 3 cats but only one file exists on disk so when you delete a photo it is moved to the next copy.

Let me be sure I'm clear: you're saying if I go to a photo that has an entry in two different categories and use the edit->delete photo function, it will leave the file on the disk and leave the other database entry/entries intact, correct?

If so, does it correct the other entries' "additional categories" fields?

Also, does it move the file to the next category's directory on the disk?

Thanks.

Yes if you delete an additional copy the others are fine and it moves the file to the next category.
