No Thumbnail After Category Move

We've just noticed that if we move an image from one category to another, PP6 seems to delete the old location's thumbnail.

As a result, forum posts that contain the old thumbnail link now just show a red box in IE and nothing if Firefox.

I assume this is a bug and not a feature. Please could you tell me how we can change it, as it's breaking the link to hundreds of PP6 thumbnail images in our forum

Thanks

Stuart

That would not be a bug in our product. We have no control over links you post elsewhere outside our product so if you allow users to move photos this is true you will have broken links so you would need to manually update those links where you post them. Nothing we can do about things outside our program.

OK, so is it possible to get something built that will automatically create a redirect from the old location of the thumbnail to the new one whenever an image is moved? Or can I stop the old thumbnail being deleted - the link to the full-size image still works, so I don't really mind where the old thumbnail is stored.

There is nothing we can really do about links posted outside our program sorry. It would be considered a bug if we left the photos in the old category so your forum links would work so its kind of an issue there.

But the same thing happens if I post the links inside your program? I can upload two images and refer to one in the other's comment box by showing it's thumbnail, like this:

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ar...hp?photo=51697

Now if I move the refered image to another category, the thumbnail will break. This is all happening inside photopost software, so nothing to do with external links etc. How can I stop it from happening?

Correct the issue is we can do nothing about what users or you post anywhere in a comment a description etc thats a hard coded link and there is nothing we can do. We can only control the dynamic links within the software and those work fine and update if you move something.

I hope this further explains your issue. It is not an issue with the program itself. It is an issue with posting hard coded links anywhere and you move the image it will indeed break.

Can I suggest that you at least add a note like 'This will break thumbnail links' under the 'Allow users to move their own images?' choice in the admin options.

As I mentioned, it doesn't break the links, it just breaks the thumbnail image. So if we can stop the thumbnail being moved it's OK. Either that, or there needs to be some sort of redirect include. I'm sure it can be done, it just depends if there's the will to do it, but I guess it's just not a priority until it happens to lots of your customers.

No it cant be fixed and as stated there is nothing we can do it really honestly. it would not matter how many customers it affects my answer here would not change.. If you place hard coded links to photos outside the program in html files forums or even within fields in our program in a dynamic program like this where users can delete or move their images then your asking for broken image links.

The best thing you can do is maybe use some mod_rewrite on your site to make any broken images appear as a transparent 1px image so broken links may not be shown.
