Per the install instructions your uploads and data directories have to be set at every level down to 777 permissions

How do you set directory permissions?

In your ftp client you can usually right click a directory and see properties or chmod and set permissions to 777. Some clients will have a checkbox that says apply permissions to all subdirectories and you can check that. If not you will need to do the same for each directory beneath data at every level down. Same with uploads.
