High server load when approving Pictures

For some reason, when I do batch approving of at least 12 pics or more, My sever load doubles and even triples. I have to hurry and restart apache before it stops responding. I am not sure why this is happening.

My server specs:
Dual Xeon E5310 Quad Core (Clovertown)
6 GB RAM
120GB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache
Linux - CentOS 4 (kernal 2.6.9-42.0.8)
Apache v1.3.37
PHP v4.4.4
MySQL Version 5.0.27-standard
vBulletin 3.6.7

Try setting your perpage lower and see if that helps.

You can also try giving PHP more memory in your php.ini
