PP 514 Rating possibility disappeared(NOT A BUG)

Hi

PP 514

I just upgraded from PP 513 to 514. Now no rating seems to be possible anymore, only comments. The rating bar (quick rating and the rating bar above comments fields) disappeared. In 513 Ratings it was visible.

I use internal registration system, no vbulltin

How to fix this?

It does not appear when you are trying to rate your own photos otherwise I show it shows

I always checked with 2 different usernames. One for uploading the images, the other one for viewing it while beeing logged in.

I tried the same with another gallery upgrade from 5.13 to 5.14. In this other upgrade there is no problem with this. I made with both galleries exactly the same upgrade procedure with exactly the same files.

How can it be that in gallery 1 it does not show the rating options and in gallery 2 it shows them?

is there any other file responsilel for showing the rating options which is neither in the template folder nor in the rootdirectory?

I did not overwrite any forums or vbulletin files, since it is a stand alone installation

Do you have the admin switch to allow quickrates on or off in this other install?

In ACP the option "Display quickratings under photos?" is set to "yes"

Is there somewhere else an option that I might have overseen?

Not that I am aware of other than check to ensure your new files are actually being uploaded. I know sometimes ftp clients dont overwrite some files on some servers for whatever reason

I deleted the old ones before I copied the new ones into the directory. So this can not be the reason.

Not without looking at your installs no sorry. 5.11 or I beleive 5.12 had a bug with quickrate box not showing but this was fixed a while ago so as long as comments are on for the specific usergroup and rating is set to YES it should appear. I would need a url and admin login to peek about and example cat where its not working

Did you switch integrations or something?

Your usergroups and category usergroups dont match order.

You might want to delete all usergroups in mysql except admin and do a complete refresh and then do a complete permissions reassign in categories

This is the only thing to me that would explain why things are in different order etc in the two.

2. If I delete all usergroups in the mysql table, do I risk to have an effect on users or images? How can users be afterwards again in the right usergroup?

well dont delete anything as your using photopost

The way it looks it looks quite out of order which suggests you switched integrations

However I rechecked and saved for children under that one parent cat see if you get a rate bar I do

I checked all categories. Except the category for photo competitions, neither the quick rating bar is visible, no the rating possibility with a combined comment.

In the photo competition category however, in all subcategoreis both, quick rating bar and the normal rating bar is visible now.

Unfortunately this is the only category in which I disabled through Admin menu/catogories/photocompetitions/edit any comment and voting options.

So in the categories where it shall show rating options it does not and in the category where it should not, it shows them now...

Any hints how to fix this?

as a side note: I had to uncheck the user permission for commenst and postings in the current photo competition "red", since it is still only upload time for the users, but no user is allowed to post commenst or rating before next sunday

The old competition, which expired already I left in the setting you gave them, since there can not be done any harm anymore.

o.k., I investigated further. I saw that you enabled in the "photo competition category" also votings. I never allowed votings in this gallery in the past.

So I enabled for test purposes in the first category "nature & wildlife" also votings for ceratin usergroups (in admin menu/categories). And suddenly both rating bars are appearing.

So there must be some kind of bug that voting and rating is linked to each other, which was not the case before...

I doublechecked now with my other installations and there voting was enabled in the admin menu/categories.

But voting and rating are 2 different things. How can I make sure on a category by category basis, that users can rate, but not vote?

Since it is not the same, it should not be linked to each other, right?

I simply reset cat permissions for the weird named cat and its children you told me to look at

You will most likely want to go to every parent cat and reset permissions and check the box to update children. thats the fastest way to trickle down permissions

as I found out now, permission setting resetting etc. has nothing to do with it.

I found the reason for this problem: The way how you can set the options in admin/categories changed over the last couple of versions. As a consequence, some wordings like voting are not correct anymore within categories.

In the text it should be added, that if this category is set to "ratings", these voting options act as rating options. They act only as voting options, if the category is set to "contest" within the drop-down menu.

Without this knowledge, PP 514 acts totally differnt than previous versions and this leads to confusion and is wasting your and my time.

This is the background information:

In the past (around pp version 5) rating was possible if comments have been possible. You only checked this in the categories with "commnets" for each usergroup. Then you introduced "votings". For this you added in the categories another possibility to activate and disable votings for each usergroup. But this was in the past never linked to ratings.

From around version 5.12 or 5.13 (my guess) the voting and rating seems to be linked to each other. You invented a drop-down choice within categories for "rating" and "contests". Depending on the setting in this drop-down box, the option for usergroups called "voting" acts for ratings or for votings. But there is no hint, that this is also the setting for ratings, if the dropdown choice is set to rating (which is the standard setting in all fresh install)

I checked this with some other installations. It is always the same. I can not check whether votings work properly, since I always have the same IP address and can not uploload an image and vote for it later on (with ratings, I am able to do that strangely)

How to fix it:

So my advice would be to change the wording for the voting options. Currently it is:

These checked usergroups can vote in this category,
unless a usergroup's overall posting access is disabled.

-------------------

The word "vote" should be changed to "rate", since this is the standard setting for every fresh install.

Additionally, it should be made clear, that this also the right place for the voting settings, in case you put this category to "contest".

This would have saved me easily 3-4 hours of checking and posting here in the forum and for you also some time...
