storing files above public_html

is it possible to store my files outside of the public domain. i want to protect my files from being accessed directly by the URL and i dont want to use htaccess to accomplish it.

HC,

That shouldn't be a problem. Just remember to change your URLs after your done to point to the new locations.

HC, just found out you don't want to do this. While looking up an answer in a different thread I realized that the current version of vBGallery won't permit this to happen since the current version requires a URL to the /files folder in addition to the complete file path. If the files were being served by the image path alone it'd be OK but since it's using the URL value it's a problem.

Sorry about that.

To be honest, I would've sworn it could do it and I would've lost a huge amount of money if somebody had made a bet about it. I also remember the topic coming up in conversations a long time ago back in the days when the product was being polished from a 'beta' release to a 'gold' release and based upon feedback from people that the feature was added.

Jump forward and it turns out this same topic came up in conversation this weekend in the staff forum. In the ACP the requirement to have the URL to the /files folder breaks the ability to have that folder above the exposed public html folder.

I'll keep it on my list of things to explore but at least for the short term it can't be done as-is.
