Upload dropdown box category confusion.

I'm finding a lot of users uploading to the wrong subcategories because of the way the drop down box (after clicking upload) displays them.

I have categories/subcategories such as (example)

Cars
-fast
-slow
-business
Trucks
-fast
-slow
-business

The "Cars" and "Trucks" categories do not allow uploads, they are strictly for organization.

What happens is when a user goes to upload, the dropdown box only shows

fast
slow
business
fast
slow
business

with no reference to the main category they are in. Is there anything that can be done about this?

Thanks
-vissa

Vissa,

Would you mind listing the exact options you have configured for the "Cars" and "Trucks" categories? On my site using 1.0.1 I'm getting different results; for the categories that I have configured for 'act as category = turned off' they appear in the drop-down listing in bold are not selectable by the user.

Attached is a screen shot of what I'm seeing for those types of categories. I suspect for your categories there are some conflicting choices that are preventing them from appearing in the drop-down.

If I turn off "act as category" for the main categories (holding subcategories) it completely messes up my main gallery display.

Here is my gallery
http://www.horsegroomingsupplies.com/pictures/

Other than the problem I mentioned with the upload drop down box, everything works and looks great. Here is a list of my relavent options
------------------------------
CATEGORY PERMISSIONS (MY "ENGLISH" CATEGORY)
Act as Category = Yes
Category is Active = Yes
Act as Members' Category = No
Allow Users to Create Sub-Categories = No
Category is Open for Images = No
Category is Open for Posts = No
Allow Replies = Yes
Allow Ratings = Yes
Category Owner = (blank)
----------------------------
MODIFY SETTINGS (main gallery options of interest)
Depth of Categories = 2
Show Sub-Categories = Yes
------------------------

Let me know if you need other settings.

I had to set things this way in order to have it display properly on the gallery hompage the way I wanted (all subcategories visible).

Thanks -vissa

Vissa,

I've been experimenting with a few different options on my site and I haven't been able to recreate it yet. I'm going to try mix & matching the category options of my 'parent' category to seeif a combination gives me the same result.

Vissa (or anybody else who might be having this problem),

Mind emailing a screen shot of your category settings on the ones that don't appear in the upload drop-down? Trying the different options discussed so far in this thread are not duplicating the problem on my site.

Thanks,
Kevin
PS: Oh, use "kevin@photopost.com" to send the pic.

Kevin, sent you an email. this is still a major problem/bug for me even after I've updated both VB and photopost VBgallery.

Vissa, I'm back. It's been a busy winter holiday season for me.

I just poked around your English category and something caught my eye... "Category is Open for Images" was turned off. I then poked around the source code and, sure enough, if that option is turned off then it is suppressed from the list of valid categories.

What exactly was occuring when you had "Act as category" turned off and "Category is open for images" turned on? Was it a style issue or something else?

If you turn on "category is open for images" then users can upload to the root category instead of the subcategories. I do not want them uploading to the root categories, just the subcategories. I thought the dropdown list was supposed to show the root categories but not allow you to select them (if you set things the way I have).

Also, can you point me to the parts of the code that generate the upload category drop-down box?

Thanks -vissa

Vissa, sorry, didn't mean to not get back right away.

OK... if you turn on "Category is open for images" then the user still can not upload images to that category if the "Act as Category" is off. When the drop-down list gets created it does not show any categories that have "Category is open for images" turned off since that is tied to the permissions logic.

The logic in question is in upload.php around line 577 -- If you're familiar with PHP and take a look you'll see why it's not as easy as just commenting out that section.
