Did you change your file storage method at any point?

i think it did change because my database now is smaller than what it was when i moved. So i think the pics were being stored in the db at one time. that's another topic. How do I know for sure the images are being stored on the server and not db?

To see which mode you're currently in....

Try ACP => vBa Gallery => Maintenance then at the very bottom check the description of the "Change File Storage Method" option. It'll either say "Click the 'Change File Storage Method' button below to turn the safemode bypass On." if safe mode is turned off or "Click the 'Change File Storage Method' button below to turn the safemode bypass Off." if it is turned on. Don't hit the button! Just check the description.

OK, that means currently safemode is turned off.

I found out, unfortunately, how those files got the naming convention like that. At some point in time somebody must've turned on safe mode and then turned it back off again. When you switch to safe mode the user ID gets prefixed to the file name but when you turn it back off it doesn't strip the prefix from the name but it does move the file back to the /files/{userID} folder tree.

I'm trying to recover my site's Gallery settings (found out there is also no warning message after clicking that button). Looks like it'll be a manual cleanup. After I'm done cleaning up my site I'll let you know where I stand with it. If you don't have a whole lot of images affected it may be easier to just re-add them.

Unfortunately I had a few thousdand images affected; sometime today (or this this week time permitting) I have to scrounge up a little script to bulk rename the files.

Actually, both modes store the images on the server. The diference is that when safe mode is on it stores all of the images in /gallery/files (with each image name prefixed by the userID) but when safe mode is turned off it stores the images in /gallery/files/{userID}. The only advantage of leaving safe mode off is that you reduce the number of files per folder (which is good for some OS's that that have restrictions on the number of files per folder) and the image name doesn't get prefixed.

Unfortunately I would've sworn before that after clicking the button the user was prompted if they're sure they really want to do it or not; 727 pages later, apparently not. I'll be making that as one of the suggestions that when people click on that button to have a secondary confirmation page before it starts kicking off.

I thought the same thing.

Maybe a better explanation as to what the safe mode is actually doing like you just did above, for those like me that had no idea..LOL

I just hope things work out with my new hosts, man this gets old fixing stuff like this over host changing, when you had a perfectly good running board..

P.S. Nice looking site and skins

Thanks
