Images never marked as 'viewed'

My category icons don't change colour after all the images have been viewed ... well they do eventually but how do you get it to update instantly?

They are updated according to the user's last visit time, the same way as they are with the forum.

it doesn't do that on my forum

If I read a thread it's marked read immediately ... if I view a picture it takes several hours to be marked as viewed.
