XML Error: not well-formed (invalid token) at Line 0

I'm trying to install and get this error message:

XML Error: not well-formed (invalid token) at Line 0

I've tried to search for a solution and keep seeing stuff about chmod something to 777. I don't know what that means. In my gallery/files folder there is only a file called index.php and if I try to open that it's empty. What am I doing wrong?

Ok, I figured out what chmod the permissions means and did that, but I still get the same error message. Please help.

Has the XML been uploaded to the admincp directory and is 777 permissions? It is being uploaded as ascaii right not binary?

I made sure the files did not transfer in binary. Still nothing. What all should have 777 as permissions? In the instructions it just says the gallery/files folder. Should more be set that way?

OH MY GOSH. How basic can you get. I was following the directions TO THE TEE

PhotoPost vBGallery Photo Gallery for vBulletin Install Instructions

When it said upload specific files to specific places that's all I transferred. I WONDERED why there were extra files! HellO! I just transferred ALL the files and what do you know... IT WORKED. I just happened to read someone else's post who said the directions were for an older version and you had to upload everything. Ok, I'm good now.
