Thumbs not being created properly

I installed the Gallery yesterday. It appears that everything is working fine, with the exception of the thumbnails. I've reviewed most of the messages on this forum and dont believe I've seen a posted resolution to this problem.

After uploading an image, when I look in the files folder, I see the proper 1, 2 folders, etc... and clicking down into each sub folder, I see the image.jpg files, but the thumb files are created with a size of 0.

So, for example, I upload test.jpg. Inside gallery/files/1 there are 3 files.

test1.jpg size 327KB
test1_thumb.jpg size 0

I was originally trying this with some good sized jpgs that were around 500kb. Thought it might be an memory issue, created a small 93kb image and it also failed to create the thumb...

Interesting note, when I use a very tiny 80x80 (16k) image, while it doesnt create a thumb (as the image is already small enough) it does use the image to show up on the thumb views...

Certainly seems like there might be a memory issue or something not set properly. Any ideas?

Are you using GD or IM?

Some other details...

PHP 4.3.9 with GD 1.8.4

It's a shared hosting server. Using .htaccess I've upped the following values as well.

php_value post_max_size "12M"
php_value upload_max_filesize "8M"
php_value memory_limit "16M"
