larger Jpegs not resizing

I have settings specified to save originals.

Works fine on jpegs up to around 500k, but on jpegs around 1mb or larger when I attempt upload, the original IS saved in the "files" folder on the server, but I get a blank page as if timing out, with no image showing up in the gallery. I've tried a few different files around 1mb.

It's as if GD is not working on the larger files.
info.php shows: GD Version bundled (2.0.28 compatible)

Any help is appreciated.

Could be running out of memory...

Could be related to a problem found with vBulletin:

It's an issue because the system can run out of memory when trying to resize large images. Jelsoft is adding code to vBulletin to check the size beforehand, and not attempt the resize if there isn't enough memory. Brian may need to do something similar.

So do we know for a fact that this is the issue? If not, how do we verify?
