Watermark Permanent vs On-The-Fly

Can someone explain the difference between permanent and on-the-fly? I've seen a message referencing only applying it to new uploads but not old. Not sure if this is the only difference? Can watermarks ever be removed?

Can watermarks be applied to individual uploads?

Does the watermark affect the original upload if the option to keep those as well is selected? I originally had this option set at no but am considering changing that since it appears I can restrict access to the original.

Is anyone using a semi-transparent watermark that appears diagonally across the entire photo to prevent reprinting? I'm considering this but also don't want to negatively impact viewer enjoyment. Some members don't care about reprint while others do.

Re: Watermark Permanent vs On-The-Fly

Permanently watermarking images will physically change the image to add the watermark. Watermarking them on the fly will simply watermark the image that is displayed in the user's browser, but will not actually affect the image.
