shadow border around thumbnails

Hola,
I have seen this on some sites that use photopost and I think it looks nice. Anyone have some advice on how to do this?

I assume this is a function of GD ir IM; going to research it today. Anyone have a comment on the affected performance when using shadow borders?

IIRC, PhotoPost just uses some background images around the thumbnail.
