More Colourful Homepage

So we've got our new gallery up and running at

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/gallery

and the general consensus from users is that the site looks a lot better, but compared to our old coppermine gallery - which can still be found at

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/wildgallery

the frontpage looks very bare with a general lack of photos. Essentially, it now looks more like a forum and less like a gallery.

We'd really like to have our frontpage showing each of the categories in columns like the old coppermine installation - i.e. a random/latest thumbnail from the category with brief info - rather than the new vba list style.

Looking at galleries from Photopost, Gallery, 4images etc, it looks as though it's common practice to present the homepage with a photo-links for each category. So I was wondering if VBA had chosen the text list style for any particular reason?

If anyone could give us some idea of where we should start looking to make changes etc then would be a really big help

Thanks

Stuart

Stuart, to get started you could assign thumbnails to the categories so at least each category would show an image next to it's name. (See here for an example.)

When you're looking at an image you will see an option that says 'Set as category image' under the 'Image Tools' section.

LOL! Well we put the option in the Admin CP as well to give people the option to specify an image that hasn't been uploaded to the gallery and/or that specific category. As long as the image is in that category though then it should be much easier to use the option on the user side.

Same here.

Anyone have any modification to make the category display more simple? Example would be just the thumbnails in columns, the category name, very brief description, and brief image count .

Take a look at the coppermine categories display. See how simple? Makes ya want to just click on one! =)

Note: vbaGallery blows coppermine out of the water IMO. Still, I would like to display the categories differently.
