Any chance moving the statistics messed up the functions? I did the same thing, and now mine do not appear to be changing correctly, even after I update the counters manually...
Moving them in the template shouldn't affect anything, and there shouldn't be any reason they would be incorrect if you used the maintenance options. You could try reverting the template to make sure something wasn't done incorrectly though.
