Use uniform thumbnail feature?

I like the layout of the Use uniform thumbnail feature, but is there a way it will make a thumbnail, without zooming in on the photo? When I use it, you cannot tell what the picture is anymore. It seems like instead of creating a thumb of the whole pictures, it just takes the center of the pic and makes a thumb out of it..

No sorry thats how it works it takes a crop of the photo center to ensure uniform thumbs.

Hmmm - guess I have a decision to make.. I wonder if it enticed the user to view the images more? LOL
