Image space is the sum of all the filesizes of the actual large files as collected from the photos table in mysql
total space is the sum space of all large medium thumbnail files and any said directories

Ah so it's the "Total disk space used by the DATA directory" that is the actual amount of space taken up by all photos?
BTW, out of curiosity, is there a way to store the binary values inside the SQL table vs the flat file format under the /DATA directory?

No we do not store photos in a database as it is way inefficient to do so.
