Gallery as subdomain or folder? Which is better

I am wondering what works better (in terms of SEO)

gallery.<domain>.com or www.domain.com/gallery

Please do suggest with possible explanations. Which one did you choose and why? How is it working for you?

I do not beleive url has anything to do with SEO

I use subdomains to make backing up easier.
Most sections the only thing that changes are the databases.
Since people are uploading images to the gallery, it takes less time for me to backup the gallery subdomain rather than the entire site.

Yeah SEO is more dependent about the format of the variables on the url and content structure in the page html

I would recommend you using yourdomain.com/gallery instead of gallery.youdomain.com

Search engine treat sub-domains as a NEW WEBSITE, that means additional link building to give weight to your new subdomain, but both have there own remarks (pros and cons).

Research a little yourself to understand which superceeds other, this also depends upon more usage/future of your site.
