Search Engine Friendly

On both PhotoPost Pro and PhotoPost Classifieds, there is a dropdown in the admin which allows you to turn on search engine friendly URL's. This is a great feature. However, here's an example of the URL's on my site:

http://www.mysite.com/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/501
http://www.mysite.com/classifieds/showcat.php/cat/3

Is it possible to make it say:

http://www.mysite.com/gallery/showgallery/cat/501
http://www.mysite.com/classifieds/showcat/cat/3

I don't thing the .php/ is very search engine friendly. I think there should be a rewrite to take the .php out, because it shouldn't be needed.

Any help/direction will be appreciated.

from a program response the .php of course needs to be there that is the file name of the program your running on the server. Say if you have this file on your server

http://www.mysite.com/whatsup.html

Your never going to be able to go here and bring up that page

http://www.mysite.com/whatsup

You must always type the filename

I am currently using a URL rewrite for a script that I made.

The regular URL is search.php?page=page-name

The URL I am using is:

search/page/page-name

I am removing the PHP with this rewrite:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.[^/]*)/page/(.[^/]*) $1.php?page=$2

So, it is possible. I was just hoping that you'd be able to do it with your scipts to make them more (proper) search engine friendly.

Yes it is possible I am speaking from a program standpoint as I noted. Not all servers permit mod_rewrite so it is not something we can implement you may modify things to suit your needs. Our program is written for compatibility in most all environments

Surely it wouldn't take much to program support for rewrites.

Any server that has GD, ImageMagick, MySQL 3.23+, PHP 4.0.2+ on it would very likely support rewrites too. I mean, practically every decent host allows them, and if anyone is using a host that doesn't - they're getting robbed and need to move. Anyone who is going to pay $129 for a script (+ $99 brand removal) would surely be hosting their site on a server that allows rewrites. PhotoPost scripts are reasonably intensive, and rewrite accessibility is not the first thing on the list of needs to be able to run the scripts.

Just food for thought, instead of just writing it off as: can't possibly be done - go sort it out yourself sort of thing.

Our script utilizes a simple implode/explode spider process to make urls friendlier it has nothing to do with Mod Rewrite or the like. It simply implodes variables with / and then explodes them later.

If you have suggestions please post them in our suggestions forum for consideration for future version but from a support perspective when you post on the support forums I will respond with the status quo of how the program operates. This is the answer you will get from any software company. We all support our scripts as they are but the good thing about software is it moves forward

If you want a fast answer to how to do it possibly post in the mod corner where users can post mod questions on how to do something the present code does not do and if its something you wish to see in a future version just make a suggestion in the suggestions forum that way the developers see it when they look.
