Large galleries (2+ gigs) and backups

Right now I backup my gallery using rsync on a remote server and sometimes I backup to my local PC. When I backup to my local PC, I tar my gallery up and then download it but you cant tar files greater than 2 gigs. Id like to hear what strategies are used to backup large 2+ gig galleries.

I usually break mine down to 2 or so folders, depending on how many pics I have.......and just compress each of them to a zip.
