problems uploading .zip files

I have some problems uploading .zip files
I have uploaded a zip file (via ftp to uploads/1) containing a lot of photos

then it just says processing images, and returns me to the category I chose them to be in, but no photos to be seen, and the zip file uploaded is gone from the upload directory
I have enabled allow zip uploads

However if I choose to upload the zip file via upload interface where I can browse to the zip file and upload it it works..
But as I cant upload a large .zip file because it times out or have a limit to how big files i can upload. I cant use this method ( and I can't change it because its on a hosted webserver)

Can some one help me?

Your file could be too large for php to handle
