"Allow albums" setting in UserGroup Editor

OK, a very basic question. There is a fundamental concept that I'm not getting here...

UserGroup Editor --> Allow albums? column
defaults all usergroup types to "no"

1) What does "Allow Albums" mean? Regular users can *already* add to their album.

2) How could the setting of "no" be working, if people can add photos to their albums?

You are mixing things up. Album, albums, gallery. An album is one thing, the member's gallery is another.
All of each member's photos appear in their respective gallery. They can also be posted directly there.
If you set "Allow albums" to yes, that usergroup will be able to create an album inside his/hers gallery.

Ahhh so Albums are just like a subfolder inside the gallery.

Why would the default to that be no?

Yup, you got it. Are just like subfolders inside the member's gallery.
They are very useful if you want to provide your members some form of personal categorization that would escape a site wide rule, for example, one of the PP users around here has a travel site and uses the albums so that each of his members can create albums for their travels.

But this example is kind of rare. From what I can see, the majority of PP webmasters don't use albums and that is probably the reason why is set to "no".

You can also allow your users to assign their albums to actual categories in the forums so that there are links to their albums.

The default is no as not everyone wants users to have this flexibility and its better to let them make the choice for their users before someone creates albums and they werent aware of the feature.

I'm just starting to use albums for the first time myself. Is there some way to prevent uploads directly to albums from taking over the recent posts thumbs? I run an adult site but if someone uploads a bunch or birthday party photos to their album it looks a little silly on my index page.

Albuns have a variable called "cattype" set to "a". You can use this in your sql query to exclude them.

PS: I've just noticed that you are afraid that a bunch of birthday party photos might shock your adult audience =)
I guess this qualifies as another "the world is changing" sign like the best rapper is white, the best golfer is black and so on

LMAO... well I would describe it as being "shocked" but three pages of thumbs showing Dad with his cardboard party hat on and birthday candles stuck in his ears does tend to make things look pretty silly on my index page.

I have a question, I was using personal albums on my site and I just upgraded to 4.7 now all the personal albums have disappeared? Is there a setting I'm missing ? The pics are still on the site but showing up in the members gallery not in the personal albums. Also is there a way to save the previous albums?

Enable the "Can Assign?" option in the usergroup settings.
