You easily can search for the ad by item_name as that correlates to title on the ad.

This is true, but if an ad is in the approval que it will not show up in a search.

The item number is not used in classifieds anywhere or displayed anywhere. It is used mainly for the payment process.

This is one reason why it would be very useful. The only way a customer would know this unique item number is if they have paid for an item already. They see it in the PayPal checkout (where they will overlook it most likely), but more importantly its included in PayPal's e-mail to them and in their PayPal account
after they have paid. If for some unforeseen reason a customer has a problem during or after the payment process, you could tell them, "Please e-mail me the item number from your PayPal purchase". If they can supply you with this unique item number, then it eliminates the step of having to go to PayPal and do a search for a user by their name to verify they have paid. If they cannot provide you with this item number, then they have never paid with PayPal and you can tell them "please place the ad again...we have no record of it". It would be something that could make an administrators life a little easier...and it would be a cool feature for the Classifieds, in my opinion.
Really, my main point is this - ads in the approval que cannot be searched. This could become a problem on larger sites that have heavy ad placement. Being able to search for an ad by item number there would be a great help, and it would be helpful in searching for ads that's not in the approval que too... but not as helpful.
