Correct settings for permissions

Should the upload and data folders (and all subfolders) be chmod 777? Thank you.

Yes they should indeed be set to 777 permissions at every level

Let me know if there is anything else we can assist with.

Hey Chuck, I am running into a *huge* problem. We recently switched web hosts and now anytime someone uploads an image to the 500 directory (Member's Gallery) the permissions are not right... they're getting errors that the thumbnail can't be built. I have changed and rechanged all 150+ directories and subdirectories in the data folder to 777; but any new images' permissions are 644 or 666? My web host stated that anything uploaded via a php script is going to not have the permissions of 777.. in fact, even *I* cannot change these new image permissions due to whatever this setting with the php script is...?

Man that was long-winded... did I not set the permissions on one of the php files correctly or do I need to ask our web host to change something?

Well the data directories need to be set to 777 permissions at every level.

You might also want to make sure if you switched hosts that you have the new uploads and data server paths entered in Admin => Global Options as well as storage Options

How to Move Servers and/or Change Directories

Yes.. all the directories and subdirectories are set to 777 and all the paths are correct.. But the images themselves are being uploaded and their permissions are like 644 or 666... and then we're getting errors about not being able to create the thumbnail in only two of our directories

644 or 666 on images is fine.

It is the directories that need to be 777.

You can post your exact error here but this is always a permissions or path issue usually here. I need to see your site to say more.

Ok, we're using server 2003 IIS 6, permissions are set on a user basis and we change them directly on the machine, no chmod or ftp.

what user(s) should we be changing and what levels...

sorry wasn't a permissions problem.

The installation script lleaves out some "/" in path statements, so you need to go in and place them correctly.

The installation script actually suggestions urls. It would be up to you to input the proper urls. I know some windows server setups will not correctly pass along the proper urls in their setup so you need to be ultra careful on install to make sure all urls are correct.
