What is the small fine print in white I can now see at the bottom of the screen?

In your pp-inc.php file it looks like you have $showsqldebug=1;

You can change that to 1

One more question: How do I change the default sort method on the classifieds categories.

Edit showcat.php and change the numeric value here to the sort you want as the default

if ( empty($sort) ) $sortparam = 2;

That should be a control panel option in some future version.
