I switched to SMTP in the email settings and added my Amazon SES info but it doesn't seem to be using SMTP. I checked the email headers after sending tests with SMTP selected and they are the same as when PHP is selected. It still sends from my server, not through the Amazon SES SMTP server.

I think your confusing something personally with something else at amazon.

The SMTP email most definately sends through whatever smtp details you specify as thats a dedicated function that connects to that external provider and sends the email.

The email should be the same. It does not matter whether your using PHP or SMTP the email header and content are going to be what we format and send. It is not going to have some external header on it. All your doing with SMTP email is using the external details your specifying to connect to that external email provided and send email header content to that OUTGOING email server to send out.

Allowing smtp email allows users whom are on servers that have php mail function locked down to send out program notifications etc.

I hope that clarifies things as the email is most definately sent from your amazon mail account.
