Page load speed: What should I investigate?

I've noticed that most of the time (although not always), my pages are loading very slowly. I've checked out a couple of other PP Classifieds sites on my same connection and they load significantly faster.

Examples...
Clicking on a category from the index page took 44 seconds to load the category page. On another PP Classifieds site I compared to, it took 4 seconds. Clicking on an ad within the category took 30 seconds to load the ad page on my site. On the comparitive site, only about 5 seconds.

My site is new and I only have about 150 products at this point.

What should I look at to try and fix this? Is it likely an issue with my host's server?

It is most definately an issue with your hosts server resources. There are things you can turn off like feature blocks category cache and other things to reduce the queries per page but on a normal working server things should load fine.

My host is looking into it, although they've reported twice my site is loading quickly for them.

On my same Internet connection, when I compare my site's page load times to another site running PP Classifieds, my times are often in the 20-30 second range while the other site is about 2 seconds. The fastest I've ever seen mine is about 5 seconds.

Yes I have seen peoples sites who claim they where slow load fast for me. It is all about the server resources and how much are consumed when someone visits the site. There is no absolute here.
