How do I edit the Expiration Date? (or Expire an Ad)

With the most recent version members could set their ads to expire in a certain period of time, such as 1 day, 1 week, 30 days, or Never. Well I'm getting complaints from my members that some ads are really old because the lister selected never. So I wanted to go in as the admin and change that to expire the ad. I see no way to do that. When I try to Edit the ad, the box for expiration doesn't show up!

I can delete the ad (don't want to do that, want the old ad around for archive and pricing purposes)

I can mark the ad as Sold (don't want to do that because the item didn't really sell)

I see no way to "Expire" an ad or choose an expiration number of days that would render the ad expired.

Can anyone help??

I think this is what your missing you need to set the cron script to expire ads and auctions

Cron Job: sendnotice.php

The site is expiring ads and auctions, but based on the value the members sets when they place an ad. If the member sets "never" then it never expires the ad. I want to be able to go in and change their "never" to something else like 30 days and then the Cron job will expire it.

So I assume it worked, however, did it also flag items expired or just send emails?

Ok i just checked my classifieds and the auctions were now all marked as SOLD, and of course will expire tomorrow, but other items in other categories that are not auction categories were not marked expired, for example there is a car listed back in March still showing up, so I suspect that the person who listed it selected expire = never. Thus the real problem here is that the EDIT AD page for teh administrator doesn't let me change that!!!

Can we get a fix? Thanks!

Chuck,
That's not a great solution since I want to give people the opportunity to expire their own ads. If I remove that, then what would the default be? 1 day/ 1 week? never? It "should" be pretty simple to add the ability to edit that field in an ad via the admin edit page should it not?

No there is nowhere to edit a duration it is picked on upload and thats it when its expired then the sendnotice script removes it

If you dont want to have non expiring ads then remove the option as I had noted

Chuck,
But I DO want expiring ads, in fact I'd like all ads to expire at no more than say 60 days, so I'd like to remove the "never" expire choice (unless there is a way to have the choices by usergroup, for example admins could make a never expire ad but regular users could not).

I guess the only way to "expire" existing ads that have their expiration set to "never" is for me to go in and mark them sold then?

You can delete them

As far as your durations correct you edit your uploadproduct templates and remove the options for the durations you do not want in that select box

If I delete the ads though, then they aren't there anymore, I'd prefer to have them in the database just not shown so if there is ever a question about something from a historical perspective I can go back in the admin console and look it up. I'll check the template to see about removing the never expire choice that should at least stop the problem going forward, but I'd still like a way to expire the ads other than marking sold or deleting.

Thats not how the application works though. Ads are deleted especially with 2.6 and higher

Ok well I think I am running the latest and greatest version, how do I check that btw? Went to the admin panel and it didn't tell me what version I am running, although I know I updated to the newest version in May-June 2007 timeframe, so anything newer?

I can, however, go to the EXPIRED QUEUE in my admin panel and it shows me a bunch of ads some very recently expired (like today) and I have the choice to "Delete, Approve, or Leave". If I just "leave" them, then they stay expired, but are not physically deleted, that's what I want. Hence the software seems to be doing what I want as long as there is a valid expiration date.

So it seems that what I have to do is the following:

1) Any ad without an expiration date I need to mark SOLD to expire it because there is no option to edit the expiration date when I edit an ad

2) I need to modify the template so that any new ads placed can only choose valid expiration dates, not "never".

Here is yet another problem, if an ad gets deleted for which I am using that ads picture as the category thumbnail the category thumbnail disappears! I'd like to have that image remain there, or must I create a "dummy" ad for each category wiht it set to never expire in order to keep a category image?? Seems strange.
