Category thumbnails/avatars

Hi there, I would like to make a thumbnail/avatar for each category but cannot find a way to do it without first uploading an ad. I don't have any real ads as yet, but upon testing if I delete the ad then the thumbnail goes too. Can I make any image the thumbnail without actually having to rely on an ad image?

That is the way it is done currently but we are looking at changing that in future versions
