Understanding Templates

I've looked all over and it appears there is no tutorial or help file describing the template files (and what they do). Is this the case? I'm having a hard time deciphering between the dozens of templates as to what does what. I'd hate to ask a series of template related questions.

I'm trying to remove the line breaks between categories, and add an easier to find button for posting an ad. I'm running a fixed 750 pixel, centered width of the main table and the body background color runs into the table and has a clear separation between each menu and category box. I'd like to remove these breaks so they're "connected"?

Also, which template has the main menu? (home, search, memberlist, etc.)

Which template has the welcome message?

Not quite for classifieds but should explain the relationship of files and templates and every file tells you what templates it INCLUDES

Also, do you have any help files or information (besides just listing files) that can help me on the layout of the "showproduct.php" layout? I wanted to change the followin:

There is too much dead space and I want to combine rows and cells

I want to remove the "supersize" link under the image thumbs b/c it's problematic (click on image, nothing happens, click on supersize and you have to resize the window just to see it)

Under the last set of thumbs there is a "." or ">" under the images for some reason and I want to remove that gliche.

There are so many if statements that I don't want to mess with (I don't use auctions) and the function names don't make sense.

Supersize is a popup window and made to be that way so your screen does not get whacked out
