Display items from the latest to the oldest by default and secondly have items that are say over a year old purged from the system?

In the install forum is the sticky on setting up your cron task sendnotice.php to truly expire ads.

You can set a category default sort order for each category in edit categories in admin.

I'm running version 2.42. Was the default sort option in the admin control panel available then because I don't see it.

probally not. I beleive this was added in 2.5

I read the sticky on sendnotice and all it talked about was expiring auctions and how often it should be run. I saw no mention of it purging old ads.

sendnotice.php expires them you need to manually purge them be deleing them from the expired que in admin.
