Place An Ad bug

Tried to post this in the bugs forum but I got rejected.

While I was running a previous installation of PP Classifieds I often got emails from users complaining they could not place an ad. Since I gave away that site and started a new one I am getting emails from users on both sites saying they can't find any way to place an ad.

I have tried every browser I have on my Mac (6 different broswers) and it works perfectly. The link "Place An Ad" shows if I am logged in and does not show if I log out.

The users who have the problem are using Windows with IE and/or Firefox. I thought they could not see the text because its not obvious but one user just sent me a screen snapshot that shows him logged in and the "Place An Ad" text is not there.

Both sites are using recent versions of PP Classifieds.

I guess this is a bug.

I dont think there would be a bug. It depends on your settings. Have you set the actual usergroup permission to place an ad. Are there users people who have not confirmed there accounts and thus are not confirmed users and therefore would not be normal users whom you have set permission to post ads.

That is the most likely scenerio here.

I have tried six different browsers on my Mac and the Place An Ad text shows if I am logged in, does not show if I log out. I got someone else to open a new account on a Mac and as soon as they activated their account it worked OK.

Some of the PC users who cannot see it have been using the other site for years. One sent me a screen snapshot that clearly shows he is logged in but there is no Place An Ad text.

I will try checking permissions but if it works for someone who just opened an account why would it not work for some people who have been using the site for years?

The only other thing I can think of that might help is that at least two of those having this problem have not actually used the site for a long time.

Looks like you are probably right. I just checked permissions and all were off except Admin access for Admins.

I will ask the users who are having problems to try again.

I believe there is a problem with cookies that may be related. I mostly use Firefox on a Mac and sometimes when I go to PP CLassifieds admin I have to log in three times.

I am already shown as logged in, I click admin - it takes me to log-in, I log-in again and it takes me to the user index, I click Admin and log-in again - it takes me to the user index. Usually I get to the Admin page on the third attempt. Sometimes I click admin and i get to the admin page immediately. I don't normally log-out so I am guessing there may be a cookie problem.

Yes check your cookies as well to ensure your set correctly.

Take note cookie settings must be exact between both applications meaning cookie path must be / and cookie prefix and cookie domain must match. I also recommend using a cookie path of .domain.com so it works on every subdomain

Thanks Chuck

It looks like the usergroup settings fixed my site. I haven't heard back from the other site yet.

I will double check the cookie setup. Something is a bit odd.

Ian, I would be interested to know your experience level etc for future reference. I may be doing a number of sites with vbPortal, vBulletin, ppClassifieds, etc
