As admin when viewing a photo there should be a link MAKE INDEX THUMB if you have Cat Avatars turned on in Admin = Index Options.

That would be correct
You would then set another cat avatar just how the feature works. To have a cat avatar the ad must exist in the category

You can not do a cat avatar unless the ad belongs to that category. Try using a non expiring ad.

this is a problem for me too, my index page is the following: http://www.publicautomotives.com/classifieds/index.php
and that would mean i would have to make fake ads in each section, and not its subsection. This would look bad on us, is there any way to just put a picture where the index avatar would go?

As stated this is not an issue. I have explained how the software feature works.
You can set whichever ad your using as catavatar as non expiring but other than that as stated the ad must exist in the category to use a cat avatar.

i am not saying its a software issue. yes it works as it was written
i don't like the feature the way it was written and want something different, something that would add features and benefit to your software. some people do want static avatars.
is there a template or file that i can edit to set this up, you can point me in the right direction or i will find it myself, it will just take me longer.

You can discuss code modifications in the mod corner. This is a support forum where users ask how to work a feature and hense I have explained the code works as it is written.
This is not really a feature you can edit a template to change. This is a dynamic feature that pulls the thumbnail one sets in the cats table and requires you tag an ad to be the avatar.

Seems like it might be a nice feature to include with Photpost Classifieds. I would like it too.
