Changing permissions on a per-user basis?

Is there a way to prevent a vB user (3.5) from being able to use the classifieds without having to create a different usergroup? I'd basically like to ban a user from the Classifieds but not the forums. How can this be achieved? Maybe create a private vB profile field - "can use the classifieds, yes/no?" - and have the classifieds script reference that field?

I have some users who are violating our classifieds policies but not the forum policies, so I just want to prevent them from posting classified ads.

You would need to place him in a special banned from classifieds group in vb and import that group into classifieds and set accordingly

So that's pretty much the only way to do it then? Create a separate usergroup?

Also, I noticed that when refreshing usergroups, it doesn't take note of usergroup name changes in vb. Is that an issue I should worry about?

Yes since the user is in vb the banning is from that side so if you want to ban him just from classifieds you need to place him in say a classifieds no posting group

usergroup settings as cached so name changes for existing groups do not update since we load the cached data so you do not lose your settings. If you want to change the name simply type in the new name and hit save.

Hey Chuck, so I created a new usergroup and changed all the permissions accordingly. For some reason, the wrong people are being locked out. They're in the correct usergroup and all of the permissions for that usergroup is set correctly and all of the category permissions are set correctly. However, I keep getting complaints from some users that they cannot view the classifieds or search. They're getting permission denied errors. I suggested they clear all of their cookies and log back in - no success. Is there another setting I'm missing here?

Vb has a ban usergroup already did you move the offending user in there?

If permissions are set to ban usergroup to no permissions only he is affected. Unless you changed your registered users category permissions or usergroup permissions I can not see them being denied access.

No, the new usergroup I set up is exactly the same as the main usergroup on my site. The only difference is that they are not allowed to post in the classifieds section. It's not a banned usergroup. And the people who are complaining are in the main usergroup - the group that shouldn't be affected by the changes. I'm not sure what else to look for.

You can PM me an admin account to look at how you have it configured but not sure what to tell you here. There are no issues that anyone has posted on this and we use the same routine for permissions on all 3 products in vb. I myself use vb3 and do not see any issue here. If the user has permission to post they can post.

The only way a user can not post is if you have not set them to or you have them in a group that you have not imported into classifieds admin yet.
