Category View - Blank Space with sub-cats (Firefox 3)

I have four top level categories, and within two of them multiple sub-cats.

With all the top level categories collapsed/closed, all appears fine:

But when I open/expand one of the categories I get white space at the right side:

I have modified both the categories.tmpl and pp-inc.php files, but on restoring the originals the problem still occurs.

That then works with the 'Show Category Avatars' option in 'Index Options' turned on, but if you turn it off it then it spans over too many columns again.

Just stuck an if statement in there (copied from the top of that file), seems to work OK. This is the code I've now got for the whole row (from line 144):

well I did a little something different in the beta but same outcome
